the Review System

The new Review System [RS] is turning out to be another mysterious introduction in International cricket. The RS was introduced into the arena to avoid mistakes committed by the umpires and there by making the  cricket error proof.

Earlier, the RS was mend to give bowlers some edge over batsmen, as most of the decisions did go in the favor of bowlers. But, the presence of human umpires in the decision making is taking some of the good features out of the RS system especially when it comes to LBW decisions.

Why is ICC afraid of using the hawk-eye directly as it is available now ? why are they including umpires in the process of decision making when it is a case of LBWs ?

Fame and Greatness of a batsmen will always come in to front when a LBW decision is refered to the RS system. The the on-field umpire will always take into consideration the fame and greatness of the batsmen whose fate is in the process of the RS system – in this case, on him.

Sehwag’s LBW shot. This was given notout after the review system.

Ishant Sharma’s LBW shot. He was given out after the RS.

Take a look at these two decisions by the WestIndian Umpire Billy Doctrove. The pictures are not very different, in any case, Ishant Sharma’s leg is far too in front – so if any doubt the umpire should favor Ishant Sharma. But, what happened is baffling. More competant batsmen, Sehwag, was given NOTOUT while the tail-ender, Sharma, was given OUT.

It is just another example showing that whatever modern technology has to offer will eventually be judged on the merit of the onFIELD umpires. So, the question remains – WHY CANT ICC DO HAWK-EYE THE JOB OF LBW DECISOIN MAKING ? If wimbledon can believe the HAWK-EYE, so can the ICC.
