The Kabul bombing might be the Taliban’s answer to the India’s fledglng ties with US. Blast on the day of departure of Indian prime minister to G8 meeting in Japan seems hardly a coincidence – a message sent across to India in the most brutal way. Indian workers were attacked in Afghanistan before too. But, it is the first time that a diplomatic building is attacked and this is the first time an Indian diplomat, an IFS officer, is killed.
Attack on diplomat building in Kabul telescopes the powerlessness of RAW, India’s external intelligence wing. For months RAWs working has been going through turbulant times. RAW had a bad time after Jaipur blasts where its lack of information was seen as a blot on intelligence gathering. Effectiveness of RAW is being increasingly questioned nowadays, unlike its earlier sucess years, pointing to friction at top level of the organisation. Some of the recent RAW incompetences include “srilankan spy episode”, Pakistan emergency situation, Nepal elections, and Jaipur attacks.
Some western intelligence agencies are refusing to exchange information with India due to the presence of RAW chief Ashok Chaturvedi. Incompetance of Chaturvedi is viewed as the prime reason for the recent hiccups in RAW.
